I'm delighted to you to invite you to the launch of 'Going Forward Looking Back: Reflections on two decades of Irish charity work in Central and Eastern Europe' on Friday 25th February 2011 at NUI Maynooth. The book will be officially launched by Mairead McGuinness, MEP, at 7.30pm. The launch is followed by a one day conference for charities & volunteers with an interest in the region.
The publication is based on interviews with 31 charity workers and volunteers who have dedicated themselves to helping the most vulnerable citizens in the region over the past twenty years. Each story is powerful and unique – illuminating the journeys of 'ordinary' men and women who were moved to help in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster, the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu, the Bosnian conflict and the collapse of the Soviet Union. The variety of people and organisations involved makes the finished book a very interesting read and wonderful testimony to the huge Irish aid effort over the years.
The book has come about through the Eastern Europe Aid & Development Network, a new initiative established in 2009 to bring together Irish charities working in Eastern Europe to facilitate improved effectiveness, through communication and co-operation. Today there are up to 100 Irish voluntary groups still working in the region, many since the early 1990s. For more information about the Network, to order the book or register online for the Conference, please see www.easterneurope.ie
Best wishes,
Frances
